The 50-year-old female suspect involved in a random stabbing Thursday afternoon near the corner of Stanley and Baker Streets in Nelson is facing a handful of charges according to Nelson Police resulting from the incident.

Nelson Police said the woman has been charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, assault with a weapon and assault causing bodily harm.

Police believe the alleged attacker did not know the 29-year-old woman from the Slocan Valley, who was stabbed five times with a knife in the incident.

Members of the public intervened to stop the attack, most likely saving the victim’s life.

The woman, first name Ramita, is now in Kelowna General Hospital, recovering from her injuries.

A gofundme page has been set up to help the family.

The suspect, remaining in police custody, is expected to make a court appearance this week.
