There are some issues of speed along the Nelson to Salmo Great Northern Trail.

Along the straight stretch of the trail south of Salmo there have been reports of issues where motorcycles or ATVs have been traveling too fast.

To be on the multi-use trail, they have to be licenced vehicles and, technically, the riders have to be of age, said the Regional District of Central Kootenay manager of Community Services Joe Chirico.

However, speed is the big issue. In conjunction with the Ministry of Transportation, the regional district has been working on different strategies to slow the traffic down, but they haven’t come to a resolution as to what the best solution is.

“On other parts of the trail we used a staggered block system that would force you to do a zigzag, and that would require people to slow down,” he said.

As well, they have used diversions or removed motorized traffic off of the main trail, circumventing the trail on multiple routes.

“There is a number of different things that we are looking at and trying, but we are making slow and steady progress and now we’re refining the process,” said Chirico.

• Some areas of the Nelson to Salmo Great Northern Trail are also in need of repair, according the Nelson Recreation Commission.

Where the trail crosses Highway 3, where there used to be a sharp corner, the trail has been worn and has been quite rough and will need resurfacing.
