No injuries were reported but damage was significant following an explosion and fire at the Alpine Motel Friday evening Nelson Fire Rescue said in a media release.

Nelson Fire Rescue received a call at 7:49 p.m. Friday that an explosion had occurred at the motel, located at 1120 Hall Mines Road in Nelson.

Fire crews arrived shortly after the call was received to see bystanders forced to flee from the location after fire proved to be too large for two portable extinguishers.

“The first arriving crew was tasked with interior fire attack and a primary search to ensure that there was nobody in the unit,” Nelson Fire Rescue said.

“Other personal were ensuring evacuation was being conducted from nearby suites.”

Nelson Fire Rescue said crews entered the structure to extinguish the fire and investigate that the fire had not spread to other parts of the building.

The majority of the blaze was contained to the room of origin with fire spreading to the rear of the building through the dryer vent that also ignited a small amount of grassy material outside the structure.

“The cause of the fire and explosion is currently under investigation by Nelson Fire Rescue and Technical Safety BC,” the release said.

Two engines, one utility vehicle and 13 personnel responded to the scene. Damage is estimated at $25,000.

Nelson Fire Rescue said it would like to remind the public to ensure dryers are maintained properly including frequent cleaning of lint from venting lining and following each load of laundry.
