The Nelson Police Board announced Tuesday that Superintendent Donovan Fisher of the RCMP be sworn in early March at the new Chief Constable of the Nelson Police Department.

Superintendent Fisher replaces current Chief Constable Paul Burkart, who is retiring.

“Superintendent Fisher is a highly experienced and accomplished leader known for building strong relationships”, said John Dooley, Chair of the Nelson Police Board and Mayor of the City of Nelson.

“The Police Board looks forward to welcoming Superintendent Fisher and working with him in this role leading and serving our community.”

Superintendent Fisher, married for more than 25 years with three children, is currently District Commander for Central District Saskatchewan — a position he has held since December 2018.

“I am very excited and honoured to join the Nelson Police Department as their new Chief Constable and I am looking forward to working alongside the exemplary women and men of this department and to serving the citizens of Nelson,”  Superintendent Fisher said.

“My goal is to have a positive impact on the community of Nelson and increase overall public satisfaction by working closely with leaders and social agencies to move joint initiatives forward in a timely and effective manner.”

“I am also looking forward to getting back to the frontline and community-oriented policing,” Superintendent Fisher added.

Superintendent Fisher joined the RCMP in 1995 and was posted to K Division (Alberta), firstly to Wainwright Detachment, then in 2000, was transferred to Gleichen Detachment/ Siksika First Nations.

In 2004, he joined the Integrated Response to Organized Crime (IROC), a unit made up of members from the RCMP, Calgary and Edmonton Police Services. In 2007, he returned to contract policing as a Detachment Commander in south eastern Alberta, overseeing the administration and operations there for the next three years.

In 2010, Superintendent Fisher transferred back to Calgary to the Financial Integrity program, then worked in the Commercial Crime Unit, and eventually became the Officer in Charge (OIC) of the International Anti-Corruption Unit (IACU).

In June 2013, then Sgt Fisher had the privilege of representing the RCMP and Canada’s anti-corruption initiatives, as he was requested to give the opening presentation at the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) conference in Paris, France.

In November of 2014, he was commissioned and transferred to F Division (Saskatchewan) and became the OIC of the Integrated Organized Crime North unit.

This included several integrated investigative units and under cover street teams, made up of RCMP, Saskatoon and Prince Albert Police Services members.

In 2017, Inspector Fisher became the OIC of Federal Operations and National Security for F Division.

He oversaw the province’s National Security Enforcement Section, the Serious and Organized Crime units and the Integrated Boarder Enforcement Team.

Chief Constable Paul Burkart is leaving Nelson Police after more than 20 years in the department.

Chief Burkart announced his retirement in August after five years at the helm of Nelson Police Department.

Chief Burkart, who began his police career in Nelson in 2000 after five years with the Calgary Police Department, served as Inspector and Deputy Chief at NPD to previous Chief Constable Wayne Holland.
