RCMP said Wednesday that a house fire in April of 2020 that the killed a woman south of Balfour at 6100 block of Sykes Road is no longer considered suspicious.
RCMP said a 45-year-old woman died in a fire, and the cause at the time of the blaze was being investigated.
“An autopsy of those remains has led to the positive identification of the deceased, a 45-year-old Balfour woman,” said Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey, spokesman for the RCMP Southeast District.
O’Donaghey said further investigation has led police to believe that the woman died as a result of the blaze, which is no longer being considered criminal in nature.
Police said although an exact cause of the fire has not been able to be determined by investigators, they believe the blaze was accidental in nature and possibly related to a burning heat or light source.
O’Donaghey said due to the privacy of the deceased under the Coroners Act, the name the deceased will not be released.
The RCMP and the BC Coroners Service have no further information for release.
The location of the structure fire is approximately 27 kilometers north of Nelson on Highway 3A.
