RCMP said in a media release Thursday that human remains, positively identified as a missing Nakusp man, were found earlier this week by a couple walking along the shoreline of Upper Arrow Lake in the vicinity of Needles North Road, in Needles BC.

Police said both the RCMP and the BC Coroners Service are investigating the circumstances surrounding this unexpected death after the remains were found Saturday, October 10, 2020.

“Investigators have since positively identified the remains as 35-year-old Christopher Sanford, who had been reported as a missing person to the Nakusp RCMP on August 5, 2019,” RCMP said.

“Sanford’s GMC S-15 pickup truck had been located abandoned, in nearby Fauquier, shortly after his disappearance.”

RCMP S/Sgt. Scott Aschenbrenner, Unit Commander of the Southeast District Major Crime Unit said Sanford’s family has since been notified of the latest developments in this investigation.

“At this time the focus of the RCMP investigation will be to determine whether or not criminality was involved in Mr. Sanford’s death,” S/Sgt. Aschenbrenner said.

Police said the BC Coroners Service is conducting an independent and concurrent parallel fact-finding investigation.

Neither the RCMP nor the BC Coroners Service has more information to release.
