RCMP said in a media release Tuesday that police and the BC Coroners Services are currently investigating circumstances surrounding the sudden death of a man discovered inside a cabin situated on the south shores of the West Arm of Kootenay Lake.

RCMP said that Monday (June 8, 2020) at 1 p.m., police received a report that a deceased individual was discovered in the North Shore area, inside a cabin on the south side of Kootenay Lake.

RCMP said according to an area resident, an unknown man had knocked on his cabin door and alerted him to the grim discovery he made in a neighbouring cabin.

“The man, who was unfamiliar to the complainant, departed the area on foot,” RCMP media release said. “The resident was alarmed by the discovery, called for emergency assistance and left the area to ensure his own personal safety.”

RCMP said officers attended to the remote location in a RCMP vessel.

RCMP said investigators located and have since positively identified the deceased as a man in his 50’s.

“In order to fully investigate the circumstances surrounding his death, additional resources were deployed into the area to locate the unknown man who made the initial discovery,” RCMP media release said.

Police were able to locate the individual walking along train tracks in the area.

“Although investigators do not believe criminality was involved in the man’s sudden death, a full determination has yet to be made,” ssaid Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey, spokesperson for the RCMP Southeast District, in the media release.

RCMP said investigators believe that although the now identified man had used a canoe to reach the south shore, and allegedly unlawfully gained entry into the deceased’s dwelling, he was not responsible for the death of the deceased.

The BC Coroners Service has been notified, attended the scene and is also investigating the circumstances surrounding the man’s death.

The Coroners Service’s fact-finding investigation will look to determine who died and how, where, when and by what means they came to their unexpected death.

Due to the privacy of the deceased, the man’s name will not be released. The RCMP and the BC Coroners Service have no further information for release.
