RCMP said in a media release Tuesday, Police and BC Coroners Service are investigating the circumstances surrounding a mobile home fire after the body of a deceased individual was located inside.

Police said on Saturday, March 7, 2020 shortly after 9:30 p.m., the Nakusp RCMP responded to a report of a fully engulfed mobile home structure fire in the 5300-block of Highway 6 in Burton BC. The Burton Fire Brigade also responded to the scene of the fire.

Police said an area resident heard some noises coming from the mobile home and discovered the blaze when they went to investigate.

“Sadly, the complainant wasn’t able to safely gain entry inside the home, but managed to call for emergency assistance,” said Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey, spokesperson for the RCMP Southeast District in the media release.

“A deceased individual was located inside the home during a search of the premises following the blaze.”

The BC Coroners Service has been notified and are now investigating. The Coroners Service’s fact-finding investigation will look to determine who died and how, where, when and by what means they came to their unexpected death. Efforts remain underway to positively identify the deceased and notify their family.

Due to the privacy of the deceased, under the Coroners Act, the deceased’s name will not be released. The RCMP and the BC Coroners Service have no further information for release.

“At this stage of the investigation criminality is not suspected in the blaze, nor the individual’s sudden death,” adds Cpl. O’Donaghey.
