Pulpit Rock hikers advised cougar may still be in area

Hikers eager to tackle Pulpit Rock trail, accessed via Johnstone Road north of side of the West Arm of Kootenay Lake adjacent the City of Nelson, are advised that cougar still may be in the area.
A Facebook post urges hikers to remain vigilant.
“The cougar is still around someplace so please be vigilant and hike in groups if possible,” the post said.
“Tackle the trail in groups and carry Bear spray.”
Hikers are also advised, if the cougar is seen, to make a report to the BC Conservation Officer Service.
In late April, BC Conservation Officers suggested hikers stay away from Pulpit Rock trails after the department received two reports of cougar interactions near the upper part of the trail.
Pulpit Rock Access Regional Trail is a designated recreation trail that is used extensively during by locals and tourists.
The trail is easily accessed by using Johnstone Road, offering a short, but steep, 1.8 kilometer hike to a viewpoint that looks over Nelson.
