Police investigate boating accident near Harrop Cable Ferry

Police said preliminary findings suggest that lighting conditions at the time the accident combined with possible alcohol were each contributing factors in this crash.

RCMP said officers continue to investigate a boating accident late Friday (July 10) evening on the West Arm of Kootenay Lake near the Harrop Cable Ferry.

In a media release, police said at 10:11 p.m., Kaslo RCMP received a request to assist BC Emergency Health Services following a marine incident on Kootenay Lake.

“Police were told that a boat had just collided with a light house north of the ferry terminal, and that at least one individual was still in the water,” the RCMP media release said.

The release said Kaslo RCMP immediately initiated a call out to Kaslo Search and Rescue for support.

However, while driving to the accident scene, BC Emergency Health Services updated police that all boat occupants accounted for after making it to shore.

Police then cancelled the SAR team from Kaslo.

“Police learned that an area resident had transported all the occupants off the water and secured the damaged vessel to prevent it from drifting away,” RCMP said.

While the investigation continues, police said preliminary findings suggest that lighting conditions at the time the accident combined with possible alcohol were each contributing factors in this crash, which could have had a deadly outcome.
