Charges against the employees are pending after Nelson Police executed a search warrant at the MMJ marijuana dispensary located in the 700 Block of Vernon Street Tuesday morning.

Nelson Police Chief Paul Burkart said in a media release officers took five employees into custody from that location without incident.

“The Nelson Police Department and the City of Nelson have attempted to deal fairly, professionally and progressively with the medical marijuana businesses that sell product to legitimate customers who require prescribed medical marijuana,” Burkart said.

“Shops owners and staff have been educated by both our department and city staff that licensing is strictly for medical marijuana.”

“Business owners and their staff should be well aware that any activities outside the sale of medical marijuana could be subject to investigation, and may result in charges, both under local bylaws and the criminal code,” he added.

Until charges are formally laid, Burkart said police will be making no further comment on this investigation as it is still on-going.

“A further update can be expected in the next week,” Burkart said.

Burkart said the five employees taken into custody were released Tuesday afternoon.
