Goalie Grady Groenhuysen’s shootout save sparked the Nelson Leafs to a 4-3 victory over Revelstoke in the final of the Nelson Minor Hockey Peewee Rep Tournament Sunday at the NDCC Arena.

Groenhuysen’s save came after Dax Dewar put the Leafs, which have now won three consecutive tournaments, up in sudden-death shootout.

After both teams advanced to the final, Nelson blasting Wenatchee Wild 10-4 in the semi-final, Revelstoke looked poised to stop the run of the Leafs after jumping to a 3-0 lead after two periods.

However, the Leafs began to chip away at the lead 30 seconds into the third period.

Leaf’s Captain Sebastian Conne-Correnti cut the lead to 3-1 before Eliot Rude closed the margin to a single goal with a marker.

Miller Tedesco then tied the game at 3-3 with time running out in the third period.

After two five-minute overtime periods settled nothing — the first five-minute frame a 4-on-4 game —  followed by a 3-3 mini-contest, the teams went to shootout.

Tedesco and Jack Boyes scored for Nelson as the teams finished regular shootout tied at 2-2, setting the stage for the sudden death format to decide the championship.

Seven teams from Spokane, Wenatchee, Coeur d’Alene, Vernon, Grand Forks and Revelstoke joined host Nelson in the three-day tournament, which began Friday at the NDCC Arena.
