A quick start turned sour in a hurry as the Nelson Peewee Leafs lost 5-1 to Kelowna during semi finals of the Trail Peewee Rep Minor Hockey Tournament Sunday at the Cominco Arena in the Silver City.

Nelson opened the tournament with two convincing wins, dumping host Trail 7-4 Friday and Kelowna Tier I 5-1.

But the strides Nelson made were soon dashed as the Reps lost to Westside twice, once in round robin and the other during the playoff round.

“It’s good to have good goalies and they (Joey Timmermans and Curt Doyle) played real well this weekend,” said coach Ron Podgorenko.

Against the host team Everett Hicks filled the net with four goals while Justin Podgorenko added a pair to lead the Leafs. Aigne McGready-Bruce also scored for Nelson.

Curt Doyle was in goal to register the win.

Nelson kept up the momentum Saturday by blasting Kelowna Tier II thanks to a two goals from Taylor Cooper and Hicks.

Jacob Shukin scored the final goal for Nelson.

Joey Timmermans lost his bid for a shutout midway through the third period.

However, the Leafs lost the drive that got them two wins after Westside blasted Nelson 5-0 later Saturday. Doyle was in goal for Nelson.

Sunday, the result was the same for Nelson as Kelowna Tier II got the better of the Leafs in playoff action.

The Leafs have a pair of tentative games this weekend against Elkford.
