One fatality reported in Redfish structure fire

RCMP is reporting that one person has died in a fire south of Balfour early Wednesday morning.

The media release said shortly after 5 a.m. Wednesday Nelson RCMP were notified of a structure fire at a home in the 6100-block of Sykes Road, approximately six kilometers south of Balfour near Redfish.

RCMP said attending firefighters from Balfour Harrop Fire Department, who were assisted by North Shore Fire Department, discovered human remains inside the home during a search of the structure following the blaze.

“Although an exact cause of the fire is not yet known, investigators are treating the blaze as suspicious in nature at this time,” said Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey, spokesperson for the RCMP Southeast District. 

“Efforts remain underway to confirm the identity of the individual whose remains were found inside the home.”

The RCMP Southeast District Major Crime Unit (MCU) has assumed conduct of the ongoing police investigation, assisted by the Southeast District General Investigation Section (GIS), the RCMP Central Kootenay Forensic Identification Services (FIS) and the Nelson RCMP.

The BC Coroners Service is also investigating.

The location of the structure fire is approximately 27 kilometers north of Nelson on Highway 3A.
