NPD reports cougar sighting in Nelson

Nelson Police are advising the public of a cougar sighting during the past few days in various locations in the Heritage City.

Police report the cougar was last spotted in the 500 block of Anderson Tuesday evening.

Nelson Police want to provide safety tips in case a member of the public encounters a cougar:

  1. Never approach a cougar
  2. Immediately and forcefully show the animal that you’re a human by waving your arms and being
  3. vocal
  4. Never turn your back to a cougar. Always face it while slowly backing away.
  5. Never run away as it may trigger a chase response from the cougar.
  6. If a cougar attacks, fight back.

Residents are encouraged to monitor children closely outdoors and to bring pets in at night.

The BC Conservation Service has been advised of the recent cougar activity in Nelson.
