NPD deals with variety of calls during Summer of 2022

Nelson Police recently completed a very busy summer for services, responding to more than 1,800 calls a NPD said in a media release.

A summary of the 1,839 calls for service had officers responding to incidents from a man brandishing a knife following a multi-day drug induced bender to complaints of noise from water bombers fighting area wildfires to a man lighting his shirt on fire after depositing a lit cigarette into his pocket.

Suspect apprehended following drug induced bender

Nelson Police responded to a call of a Nelson man ransacking a house following what was believed to be the tail end of a multi-day, drug induced bender.

Officers arrived on scene to find the man inside dressed in multiple winter layers and brandishing a knife

Police said the man eventually advanced toward officers trying to shield himself behind a sleeping bag but was successfully apprehended, unharmed, after a taser deployment.

Senior with dementia reunited with family

Nelson Police dispatched officers to Canadian Pacific property on the waterfront following a call of a suspicious recreation vehicle traveling down toward the rail property.

When officers ran the Washington licence plate, they found a positive hit for a Silver alert from Washington State, USA for a missing senior with dementia. 

Officers apprehended the man under the Mental Health Act, who spent the night at Kootenay Lake Hospital before being reunited with his very relieved family. 

The senior was unaware he was in Canada and thought he had made a wrong turn having driven for 7.5 hours. Canadian Border Services Agency followed up as the vehicle had run the border outside Grand Forks.

Suspect refuses arrest

Nelson Police received a call at dispatch from civilian reporting that a vehicle was driving erratically.

Members located the vehicle in Mountain Station area before initiating a traffic stop.

Nelson Police said the vehicle stopped initially, however the driver refused to cooperate with officers’ commands and then decided to flee the scene.

During the attempted escape, the driver drove at the police officer and collided with trees and a truck.

The driver got a short distance before stopping and bailing from out the vehicle and running behind a chicken coop.

Nelson Police said the officer pursued the driver on foot and chased the driver back and forth around the chicken coop, yelling, “You’re under arrest,” with the driver repeatedly responding, “No, I’m not!”

Licence suspended following poor decision

Nelson Police said in late August a Nelson women borrowed a boyfriend’s car after consuming some adult beverages.

NPD said the woman only made it a few blocks before colliding with multiple objects that resulted in the car being flipped on to its roof.

Nelson Police said thankfully both the driver and dog were able to walk away unhurt. However, the woman did lose her driver’s licence.

Complaint received of too much noise from water bombers

During a period of intense lightning that started multiple wildfires just outside the City of Nelson, Nelson Police Department spent days fielding calls in relation to the water bombers operating over the city.

Nelson Police said that the most prominent of these was placed by a gentleman who called 911 to complain about the noise.

We don’t have a furnace

Nelson Police said officers responded to a call from a local business saying a man was in the basement.

Officers were told staff allowed the man into the basement of the business after being told he was to work on the furnace.

Nelson Police said when the owner arrived and questioned who was downstairs he advised staff there was no furnace.

Police attended to remove the male from the business.

Poor choice of clothing

Nelson Police officers attended a residence after receiving third hand a report of an armed robbery in progress inside the location.

Officers attended the residence and called the single occupant out of the residence, who initially appeared unclothed.

The occupant returned inside of the residence before reappearing wearing a motor cycle helmet, ski goggles and a life jacket.

Police quickly apprehended the occupant.

Summer Darwin Award Winner

Nelson Police said the Darwin Award for the Summer of 2022 goes to the man who pocketed a lit cigarette whilst talking to officers and subsequently set his shirt on fire.
