The goal has been set and operators are standing by.

Now the listening community of Kootenay Co-op Radio has to answer the call when the November membership month drive amps it up on air Nov. 12-22.

Bear witness to the outstanding efforts by volunteers and local talent during this time as they attempt to raise $18,000 by the end of November.

The money will ensure continued operations by covering the essential costs of running the station, said Jay Hannley, the KCR station manager.

“We here at the little station with a big heart, have issued a call to action to our listeners to get active, to join or renew by paying your annual dues, because this unique, not-for-profit community cooperative radio station is member driven and member owned,” he said.

Grand prizes for the drive include a season’s pass for Whitewater Winter Resort and a facility pass for the Nelson and District Community Complex

Since 1998, the radio station has grown with a community of listeners and volunteers, now offering the current diversity of programming on three FM signals (93.5 Nelson, 96.5 Crawford Bay and 107.5 New Denver), and the world wide web.

Its home at 308A Hall St. in Nelson is a hub of culturally active, caring, socially aware and community-interested minds that represent the diversity of the area — something the grass roots radio station has aimed to represent since its inception.

CJLY is the West Kootenay’s real community access radio station, said Hannley.

“We provide diverse programming for groups who don’t have access to mainstream media; we tackle social issues that no one else touches; give coverage to the Kootenay’s arts and grassroots groups, and air programming that is uninfluenced by marketing groups and demographic surveys,” he said.

All of the programming heard on Kootenay Coop Radio is produced by volunteers. It is radio for the community, programmed by the community.

“Now we are asking for the community to support us,” said Hannley. “Acknowledge our volunteers’ efforts by activating your membership and paying your dues every year. The goal this year is reach $18,000 or 1,000 active members, and with your help this is possible.”

Membership rates, payment options and details on events during the month are all available on their website (www.kootenaycoopradio.com), on air, or by calling 352-9600.

Special radio programming, Nov. 12-22

You’ll hear extended hours of local live music from the station lobby and everyone is invited to drop in and be part of the studio audience, have a look around, and to walk away with a new KCR Membership card.
