Myron Nichol edged out Sunflower City teammate Bill Van Yzerloo to capture the top prized at the 2018 Doug Bothamley Memorial Open Cashspiel Sunday at the Nelson Curling Club.

Nichol, who defeated the Devin Anderson rink of Grand Forks to reach the final, pocketed the lion’s share of the cash at the 20-team weekend spiel.

Nichol’s rink included Don Bedard, Garry Beaudry and Dustin Ford.

Team Melford of Cranbrook-Kimberley finished top top of B event while Jamie Ingram’s rink from Nelson-Castlegar took home the C event.

Ingram was joined by third Brent Pihowich, second Roger May and lead Barry Marsh of Nelson.

The Rick Cutler rink of Nelson captured the D event.

Event organizer Nando Salviulo was pleased with the overall success of the weekend, especially with the Anderson rink from Grand Forks.

Salviulo said the five-man team, consisting mostly of junior curlers, attended the cashspiel to fill out the field to 20 teams.

However, the rink surprised most of the curlers as the rink cleaned up in round robin play before losing to Nichol in the semi finals of the A event.

“(I was) very impressed with their play, sportsmanship and how overall they conducted themselves the whole weekend,” said Salviulo.“Kudos to them their coaches and parents.”

The Anderson rink includes Devin Anderson, Elliott Starchuk, Dawson Reid, Dylan Dorgelo and Cody Olsen.

The Doug Bothamley Memorial Open Cashspiel provides most rinks the opportunity to test their skills prior to upcoming zone championships.

The Kootenay Men’s qualifier is set for December 14-16 in Castlegar.
