Environment Canada has issued a Winter Storm alert New Year’s Day for Highway 3, including the Paulson Summit to Kootenay Pass.

Environment Canada said drivers can expect to see hazardous winter conditions over the next couple of days as a series of disturbances will move across the BC Interior bringing significant snowfall to many mountain passes.

“Snow has developed over the Kootenay Pass early (Friday) morning with total snowfall accumulations of up to 50 cm possible through midday Sunday,” Environment Canada website said.

“The most significant snowfall accumulations are expected tonight through Saturday where 30 cm of snowfall accumulations are expected.”

Environment Canada said visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow and suggests if visibility is reduced drivers should turn on your lights and maintain a safe following distance.

Environment Canada said weather in the mountains can change suddenly resulting in hazardous driving conditions and reminds anyone taking to the roads to go to Shift Into Winter website, adjust to winter driving behaviour and use winter tires and chains.

Road conditions are available at DriveBC.
