The community of Procter will soon have a new fishing dock to call their own.

In an effort to encourage fishing, the West Arm Outdoors Club — through the Regional District of Central Kootenay — has taken it upon themselves to create a wharf on the site of the old federal dock in Procter.

The walk out only dock will not be for boats to tie up to, but for people to fish off of, said Area E director, Ramona Faust.

“The club wants to steward fishing amongst young people and old people alike,” she said. “You will be able to stand on the end of the dock and fish.”

Currently the project — that has yet to be built or have a price tag set for it — is going through the approval process with Integrated Land Management Branch.

The wharf is right in the middle of Procter in the space where the old federal dock was removed, on Wharf Road. It was a federal dock decades ago when Procter had hotels and a bustling fruit growing area.

The club will sign a 10-year lease and will pay for the maintenance of the dock, said Faust, but the RDCK will hold tenure on the dock.

“And there is virtually no cost to the taxpayer,” she said.
