The major structural work is done on the new emergency room space and the CT scanner suite is almost complete as the Kootenay lake Hospital project switches from concept to reality.

Yellowridge Construction Ltd. crews and contractors are finishing the metal framing that will form the backbone of the new patient spaces of the $15.3 million Kootenay Lake Hospital redevelopment project.

The roof is completed, the windows are in, as are the bulk of the ventilation systems and the conduits for wiring. Walls are now taking shape as dry walling is well underway.

There haven’t been many snags on the project so far and it is currently on budget for completion of the ER and CT scanner suite in the summer of this year with the balance of the project completing in Spring 2012.

Renovations for the redevelopment of Kootenay Lake Hospital’s first floor include an upgraded and expanded emergency department, which will help reduce congestion and enhance patient care.

The emergency department at Kootenay Lake Hospital will triple in size from 291 square metres (3,132 square feet) to 924 sq. m. (9,946 sq. ft.) to try and meet the projected increase in demand. Upgrades also include renovation to add a CT scanner suite.

Funding for the redevelopment of Kootenay Lake Hospital includes $8.3 million from the Province and Interior Health, $5.5 million from West Kootenay-Boundary Regional Hospital District (WKBRHD) and $1.5 million raised through the Kootenay Lake Hospital Foundation for a new CT scanner.

CT scanner update

Through a public request for proposals process, Interior Health will be purchasing a state-of-the-art 64-slice General Electric Lightspeed Volumetric CT Scanner.

It’s expected the unit will be operational in the summer with Monday to Friday service initially. As with other services, Interior Health will monitor operations and make adjustments and enhancements where appropriate.
