Nelson Soccer Association grad Ryan Lewis was named Canada West Soccer Player of the Week by the conference Tuesday.

Lewis, who played his youth soccer in the Heritage City, scored twice this weekend to spark Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack to a pair of wins over University of BC Thunderbirds and University of Victoria Vikes at Hillside Stadium in Kamloops.

TRU opened the Canada West Men’s Soccer season Friday by edging defending Canada West Champion UBC 2-0.

The six-foot Lewis, in his second season at TRU, scored the only goal of the game, heading the ball from teammate Marco Favaro at the 62-minute mark of the game.

The other marker was an own goal by UBC.

Saturday, TRU scored three times to shutout the visiting Vikes 3-0.

Lewis, Josh Banton and Patrick Izett scored for the Wolfpack.

Early in the second half, Lewis slipped through the box again to head a Jost Hausendorf feed into the corner of the net.

Keeper Jackson Gardner registered his second clean sheet in as many games.

The Wolfpack hit the road next weekend for games in the Fraser Valley against the UFV Cascades and Trinity Western Spartans.

Lewis is following in the footsteps of another Men’s Soccer star from Nelson, Mitch Popadynetz, who graduated from TRU a few years ago.

Julia Burkart, in her fourth year with the TRU Women’s Soccer team, opens the 2022 Canada West season at home Saturday, September 3 against University of Calgary Dinos.
