Time to step up and be counted.

Organizers promoting Nelson in the Air Miles Detour Contest held a good old fashion street party Saturday afternoon at the Hall Street Plaza in the 500 Block of Baker Street.

Hundreds of people responded to live music from Moontricks and Red Eyed Soul, as well as free barbecue with vendors, prizes.

Nelson, the lone rep in the contest from BC and Alberta, s battling against Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Morin-Heights, Quebec, Mulmur, Ontario and Port Hawksbury, Nova Scotia for the right to host a summer concert featuring singer-song writer Meghan Trainor.

Organizer Marc-Andre Hamelin said the Nelson Street Party was very well attended and more people signed up for the promotion in the one day than any other of the four finalists.

The contest voting runs from May 1-31.

Before anyone can cast a vote, they need to register for Air Miles (contest is open only to Canadian resident AIR MILES Collectors who are at least 16 years of age as of May 1, 2016) — and people can only vote for their favourite town once, so please choose Nelson.

However for the four-plus week period, any Air Mile earned by those registered for the competition will be also counted as a vote.

There were plenty of people checking out the Air Mile tent Saturday, getting their registration in during April and receive 5 bonus Miles which means 5 votes for Nelson!

All you need to do is register once and every mile you get until May 30th will be more votes for Nelson!
