Nelsonites gather to hear about Green New Deal

Approximately 80 people from the Heritage City joined fellow Canadians from coast to coast last week, including concerned citizens the Slocan Valley, during the Green New Deal Town Hall meeting at the United Church in Nelson.
The Town Hall is one of 150 throughout Canada as people gathered together to talk about The Pact for a Green New Deal.
The crowd heard from Nelson City Councillors Rik Logtenberg and Jesse Woodward as well as Regional District of Central Kootenay Area E Director, Ramona Faust, who helped greet participants and express their concerns on the importance of addressing the crisis.
“When we broke into discussion tables, most people focussed on positive real changes Canada needs to make to reduce emissions and make our country sustainable and more just,” said organizers Keith Wiley.
The townhall was hosted by the Nelson Chapter of Council of Canadians, the West Kootenay EcoSociety, the Nelson Interfaith Climate Collaborative and Citizens’ Climate Lobby West Kootenay.
The similar meeting, hosted by Four Nations Coalition of Indigenous Medicines recently at the Crescent Valley Hall, also experienced a high turnout.
The Green New Deal is an ambitious plan on how society can eliminate poverty while creating millions of jobs during the biggest threat of our time — climate change. The plan would transform an economy built on fossil fuels to one driven by dignified work and clean energy.
