Nelson police deal with busy weekend in Heritage City

Officers from the Nelson Police Department experienced a busy weekend, responding to no less than 73 calls for service over a 72-hour period.
Saturday morning impaired driver
Nelson Police officers were alerted to a call of a possible impaired driver in the 1000 block of Lakeside Driver Saturday morning.
Police said that once the vehicle was located, officers found the driver was prohibited operating a vehicle in the province of British Columbia.
Officers issued an appearance notice for the driver to attend court at a later date.
Pedestrian hit by vehicle at Stanley and Baker
Saturday evening, officers responded to the intersection of Stanley and Baker Street after a report that a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle.
Police said the driver remained on scene and cooperated with officers.
“The pedestrian was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and the driver was issued a violation ticket for failing to yield to pedestrian,” Nelson Police said in a media release.
Improper signal alerts police to impaired driver
Later Saturday evening, officers were tipped off when a driver was observed signaling twice but travelling straight along a Nelson street.
Nelson Police said that once the vehicle was stopped, officers suspected the driver to be impaired.
After providing two breath samples into a road-side screening device, the driver failed both readings.
Police said the driver was issued a 90-day Immediate Driving Prohibition and the vehicle was impounded for 30 days.
‘Designated Driver’ fails road-side screening
Nelson Police said that less than two hours later in the late evening, officers out on patrol noticed a vehicle travelling without its headlights on.
Nelson Police said that the driver claimed that to be the “Designated Driver” for the evening, but the officer noted signs of impairment.
Nelson Police said the driver provided a breath sample which registered fail on the road-side screening device and was issued a 90 Day Immediate Driving Prohibition and the vehicle were impounded for 30 days.
Female arrested twice Sunday night
On Sunday evening, Nelson Police said the officers were called to an assault at a local bar.
Nelson Police said a female was arrested and released a few hours later with a future court appearance.
Not long after, police were called to the 1500 Block of Lakeside Drive in Nelson for a mischief in progress and observed the same female that had just been released vandalizing a business.
Nelson Police said the female had smashed the glass windows at the mall entrance and was again arrested.
As of Monday morning, Nelson Police were called to two other incidents where windows to businesses were smashed.
Police continue to investigate the events and it’s anticipated that numerous charges will be forwarded to Crown Counsel.
