Nelson Hydro alerts customers about phone scam

Nelson Hydro is alerting customers of a scam circulating in and around the power network the City of Nelson utility said in a recent media release.

Nelson Hydro said scammers are contacting customers by phone and telling the client they owe money and will be disconnected unless immediate payment is made via pre-paid credit cards or bitcoin.

Nelson Hydro said Nelson Police is currently investigating the scam and advise anyone in contact with scammers to contact the department at 250-354-3919, ext 3.

Current business practices by Nelson Hydro:

  • Currently, Nelson Hydro is performing valid disconnects for customer accounts that are past the 90 days without payment.
  • All valid Nelson Hydro disconnect notifications are mailed out on Nelson Hydro letterhead then followed up by a phone call.
  • Nelson Hydro bills can be paid at City Hall located at 310 Ward Street in Nelson.
  • If any customer is concerned about a disconnect notification, they should call Nelson Hydro for clarification of their bill at (250) 352-8206.

 Nelson Hydro would like to apologize for any confusion this current scam is causing customers.
