Three figure skaters from Nelson gained valuable experience at the Skate Canada BC/YT Sectionals Super Series held earlier this month in Coquitlam.

Kailee Stewart, Aili Brackett and Taylor Singer achieved some excellent results during the four-day provincial competition.

“These skaters have worked very hard to prepare for the Skate Canada BC Sectional Championships and embody our sport’s ideals of discipline, passion and sportsmanship,” said Nelson Figure Skating Club coach Jordyn Eberts, who accompanied the skaters to the provincial meet.

“The fact that these skaters even qualified for Provincials is an incredible feat, considering our limited resources for high level skaters in the area.”

“These three, fit right in amongst the best,” Eberts added.

Stewart, 11, started on Day one of the competition in the Juvenile U12 category, skating to music from Home Alone.

It was the first time competing against the best in the province for Stewart, who finished, 29th with 16.36 points.

Singer, 15, competed in the Pre-novice category, skating to music from Aladdin.

Singer skated a personal best short program (22.84 points), landing everything in her routine, earning her a spot in the third warmup group for her long program on Saturday.

Once again, Singer skated an almost clean long program with one minor mistake for 39.38 points, finishing in 41st out of 56 skaters.

The 12-year-old Brackett skated on the final day of the competition, competing in Juvenile U14.

Brackett skated a lovely program to Romeo & Juliet, landing her first ever double loop in competition, resulting in 15.66 points and 41st place overall.

The three Nelson Figure Skaters next major competition will most likely be the BC Winter Games set for Vernon in March 2023.
