In an email message to the members, President Gord Wiess said it’s back to curling for the club after work was recently completed to fix an ammonia leak that forced sudden closure of the Nelson Curling Club last winter.

So dust off the broom and shine up the curling shoes, the Nelson Curling Club is back in business, ready for the upcoming 2019-20 season.

“The huge amount of effort that went into fundraising and petitioning our local governments has paid off and our ice plant is getting repaired and brought up to safety standards required by law,” Wiess explained.

“In fact, work has now begun and without any hitches in the timeline, we will be seeing the ice put in during the week of October 13th, with open ice happening the following week.”

Problems for the club began in February this year when a small ammonia leak was detected during mandatory inspection.

In the fall of 2018, the refrigeration plant was found to be non-compliant and needed safety documentation to be revised.

Weiss said at the time of the leak, further testing could not determine the nature of the leak, forcing the board to make the drastic decision of cancelling the rest of the season.

Extensive work was needed to the ice plant resulting in an emergency plan being established during the off season to get the club back up and running for the upcoming season.

The club is hosting its registration night to kick off the season on Friday, October 18th.

Leagues will commence the following week.

For new curlers wanting to give the sport a try, the club is continuing its popular Monday Night Drop In.

Wiess said the session has seen an increase in numbers over the years, and starting this year, the club is introducing a Monday Night Coordinator to meet and greet new curlers and provide tips on the sport.
