National Campaign Nets Impaired Drivers

West Kootenay Traffic, West Kootenay Integrated Road Safety Unit and detachment members from Castlegar, Trail, and Nelson put a target on impaired drivers during Saturday’s National Impaired Driving Enforcement Day.
The impaired driver blitz netted 19 drivers receiving Immediate Roadside Prohibitions ranging from three days to 90 days along with vehicle impounds ranging from three to 30 days; two 24 hour prohibitions in relation to drug impairment as well as another 30 violation tickets and 12 Notice and Orders were issued by Traffic Services.
“I am proud of the police effort to keep our roads safe yet disappointed that so many people thought it was okay to drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs,” said Sergeant Chad Badry, the NCO in charge of West Kootenay Traffic Services in a media release.
“While the immediate consequences of losing a driver’s license and having your vehicle impounded might seem tough, it pales in comparison to the potential consequences of being involved in a crash while impaired.”
Badry said the month long Counter Attack campaign will see police throughout the province continue putting in an extra effort to remove impaired drivers from our roads.
The public is urged to plan ahead during the holiday season if they intend on being under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs — walk, call a taxi, have a sober designated driver, call a friend or call a family member.
