A Meadow Creek man is facing numerous charges following a police chase Monday in the North Kootenay Lake community Kaslo RCMP said in a media release Wednesday.

The incident started in the early hours of Friday, November 18th when RCMP received a call of a person pouring a substance from a jerry can into vehicles parked in their driveway.

The local couple observed the person on their surveillance camera, who appeared to be wearing a respirator and HAZMAT suit.

RCMP said officers were led to other evidence in a nearby field and wooded area and the likelihood that the suspect had combined two precursor chemicals on site that when combined created a dangerous and hazardous gas.

“The investigation rapidly expanded,” said the RCMP media release.

“A suspect was identified and further surveillance footage of the male purchasing the precursor chemicals at a store in the nearby community were obtained.

“This male is also on conditions not to have contact with the victims and after being convicted for assaulting one of them earlier this year,” RCMP added.

After moving the potentially damaged vehicles to a safe location, RCMP obtained a search warrant for Residence, Outbuildings and a Vehicle they believed would afford further evidence of the offences.

RCMP said on Monday, November 21, at approximately 5 p.m., Members of the Southeast District Emergency Response Team and the SED Containment Team executed search warrants at a property in Meadow Creek.

RCMP said the suspected attempted to flee in a vehicle that was disabled by a spike belt.

RCMP said the suspect then continue to flee police on foot, and after three hours, was arrested without incident and transported to Nelson.

Benjamin John Velt of Meadow Creek is facing several charges and will appear in Provincial Court on November 29, 2022.

RCMP said a further search of the residence led to officers seizing several weapons including a semi-automatic handgun and loaded rifle.
