The stars continue to align for Nelson Selects U-13 Boys.

Fresh from capturing the BC Soccer Kootenay Zone title, the Select defeated Airdrie FC 3-2 to win the 2017 Kootenay East Youth Soccer Association (KEYSA) Tournament Sunday in Cranbrook.

“Playing Airdrie was great preparation for the Provincial B Cup championships coming up in Vernon, BC July 5-9th,” said  Co-Coach Joe Chirico.

Chirico said the squad had to reach to a new level of play to defeat the Alberta side in the final.

Airdrie had defeated the selects 4-2 on Saturday afternoon to win the pool. The Selects finished second after preliminary round action, advancing to meet Kootenay South Youth Soccer Association in the semi-final. Despite falling behind early 2-1 the selects battled back to lead 3-2 at the half and 5-2 at the fulltime whistle.

Tyler Walmsley scored the winner at the 24 minute mark of the first half. Dylan Watts with two and Milo Klein and Berend Platje with one each rounded out the scoring.

In the final Klein scored two goals in the first 10 minutes to set the tone. Airdrie battled back to tie the game at two early in the second half. Klein completed the hat trick at the 51 minute mark with the eventual game winner. Although the Airdrie keeper gat a hand to the ball he could not prevent it from nestling into the corner netting for the game winner.

“The boys have been preparing hard to find a new level of play and they accomplished that today. A great confidence booster,” Andre Perez, Co-Coach.

The Selects also defeated the Columbia Valley Titans 9-0 on Saturday.
