Letters: An Open Letter to Nelson City Council

To The Editor:

In October of 2017, the City of Victoria called for “climate accountability” from the fossil fuel sector.  Most of us understand that we are all accountable for our pollution emissions.  Putting a price on carbon pollution is one step in that accountability journey.

With about 30 percent of carbon emissions coming from the fossil fuel sector, the City of Victoria had good reason to ask that sector to be responsible for their share of the costs related to environmental degradation, health issues and climate disruption that is giving rise to more extreme climate and weather events.  Yes, we are all responsible as individuals, governments and corporations.

What I would like to know is why have we not heard from Nelson City Council?  Silence is giving permission for nothing to be done.

Having watched the Council debate on support for the 100% Renewable campaign, I sensed a level of inertia.

The City of Victoria has taken a stand, how about Nelson?

As always, now is the time for leaders.
