Letter: Reminder to our Federal political leaders following LNG approval

To The Editor:

In response to the Liberal approval of the northwest LNG proposal, I feel a need to remind our leaders of their campaign and post-election promises to respond responsibly to the climate changes we face.

Prime Minister Trudeau and Environment and Climate Change Minister McKenna, made internationally binding commitments to cut carbon emissions and transition our country to a clean 21st-century economy powered by renewable energy.

Current global contributions to reduce emissions are not enough to limit temperature rise to safe levels. I believe we should cut carbon emissions by one-third over the next decade to reduce our emissions to 35 per cent below 1990 levels.

To achieve this ambitious target we must:

(1) put a strong, national price on carbon pollution, (2) work to phase out coal power nationally(3) transition our energy needs to renewable power sources like wind and solar, (4) expand and electrify transit and transportation networks and (5) strengthen energy-efficiency standards for vehicles, buildings and consumer products.

These actions will provide the additional benefits of improving air quality, reducing health-care costs and diversifying our economy. I want this for my grandson’s generation and beyond.
