Letter: I don't feel represented

To The Editor:

Dear Michelle Mungall:

As a constituent, I don’t feel represented by you as my MLA or by Premier John Horgan. Even though it’s become almost routine to break election promises in Canadian politics, it is not acceptable.

Humanity is fighting for its very survival in the face of extreme climate disruption. We’re counting on our elected representatives to show the courage to stand up to the fossil fuel industry and to honour First Nations’ rights. Honouring these rights is a legal obligation, and these courageous people, whose rights have been violated ever since contact, are at the forefront of protecting our planet.

Business as usual isn’t acceptable anymore. Allowing Coastal GasLink and the RCMP to violate the rights of the Wet’suwet’en people for the sake of fracking must not be allowed. Fracking destroys our drinking water and increases greenhouse gas emissions. This is inexcusable when we have so many green alternatives. And allowing Site C to go ahead to ostensibly provide ‘green’ electricity to power LNG is greenwash.

I can’t imagine the kind of pressure you must be under to justify these decisions but, please, find it within yourself to do the right thing for your constituents, future generations and life on our beautiful earth.

I look forward to hearing how you and the BC NDP will proceed. I fear that if your party continue down this path, it will become irrelevant. The party’s economic, nation to nation and resource policies need to reflect the urgency of the extreme climate disruption we’re experiencing, and our obligations under UNDRIP.

81% of BC voters are deeply concerned about climate change. How will you respond to our concern?

I look forward to your reply.

Sincerely, Diana van Eyk, Nelson, BC
