Letter: Hydro Bill out of Control

To The Editor:

Otherwise normal intelligent people seem to lose all their common sense when the sun comes out. Read this and your hydro bill before the sun comes out.

The Nelson Community Solar Garden, a feelgood political project was to be fully funded by those opting in. This didn’t happen and you’re paying, as well as any and all future costs. You (Nelson hydro) also pay “full retail” with inflation, for the solar power. That money is distributed to those who opted in, while water that would have made that power with profits, helping reduce electric bills, spills down the river.

Balfour has grant money solar systems on three community buildings. Nelson hydro (you) pay full retail for any of their extra solar power, and lose the income from clean green waterpower sales. CBT has announced $900,000 grant money for more community building alternate energy systems.

Nelson is the only city in western Canada with its own hydroelectric generation and distribution. Why is this city that makes a huge income from selling clean green waterpower, whose own bylaw says they won’t buy any power unless it makes economic sense, buying solar power?

For February the Community Solar Garden power would have been made by our dam for about $25 and sold for a profit. Capital cost real business case loan payments $1700/mo for 25 years.

I hear calls for a Board of Directors for Nelson Hydro, which I think is long overdue.
