LeNoury scores to push Nelson's unbeaten streak to nine games

Nelson Leafs remain unbeaten in nine games, getting a late third-period goal from Michael LeNoury to tie Beaver Valley Nitehawks 4-4 Saturday night in Kootenay International Junior Hockey League action at the Fruitvale Arena.

The Leafs entered the game riding an eight-game winning streak after knocking off Grand Forks Border Bruins 5-2 Friday in the Boundary City.

LeNoury, also riding a five-game point streak, scored with just over eight minutes remaining in the third period.

Leafs’ goalie Hunter Young and Nitehawks Saran Virdee took over the remainder of the contest, each stopping eight shots in the extra frame to secure the single point for both teams.

Twice Nelson held one-goal leads in the first period as Shawn Campbell and Easton Jolie scored for the visitors. Ryan Crisalli, with his first of two in the game, and Jared Stocks, replied for the Hawks.

Hawks’ Bradley Ross and Nelson defenceman Nicholas Onofrychuk exchanged second period goals before Crisalli scored late in the frame to give the Hawks the lead after 40 minutes.

Beaver Valley outshot the Leafs 34-32 in the contest. The Hawks struggled on the power play, going zero-for-seven while Nelson was zero-for-four. Campbell and Cole Wyatt each had two points for Nelson while Michael Hagen register three assists for Beaver Valley.

Beaver Valley, 19-14-3-0-2, trails Nelson by 13 points in Murdoch Division standings.

Grobowsky powers Leafs past Border Bruins

Shawn Grobowsky scored his first goal as a member of the Nelson Leafs to power the Green and White past the Bruins in Grand Forks Friday.

Grobowsky, coming in a trade with Golden Rockets at the January 10th roster deadline, scored in a two-goal second period for the visitors.

Emery Neilson, Reid Wilson, Keenan Crossman and Mitchell Lavoie also scored for Nelson, which held period leads of 1-0 and 3-1. Evan Gorman and Zane Avery replied for Grand Forks.

Hunter Young stopped 35 of 37 shots to record the victory. Ross King, facing a total of 58 shots, was the goaltender of record for the Bruins.

Nelson finished the game going two-for-seven on the power play while Grand Forks was one-for-nine. Wilson finished the game with three points for Nelson while Neilson and Tyler Nypower each had two points.

KIJHL NOTES: Nelson goalie Caiden Kreitz was given the weekend off for health reasons. . . . Leaf netminder Hunter Young was named Nelson Game Star for both games during the weekend. . . . Nelson returns to action Friday in Fernie to face the Ghostriders before heading home to host Golden Rockets Sunday at 4 p.m. in the NDCC Arena. . . . Osoyoos Coyotes sent head coach Mark Chase packing last week. In a terse statement, the Coyotes Twitter account said the Head Coach/GM had been relieved of his duties. Assistant Coach Dean Maynard has been named Interim Head Coach. . . . In the Okanagan, North Okanagan Knights relieved John Van Horlick of coaching duties and named Ex- NHLer Dean McCammond their new Head Coach.
