Leafs look to add to unbeaten streak

The Nelson Leafs look to keep their nine-game unbeaten streak intact against two Eddie Mountain opponents as the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League enters its final five weeks of the regular season.

The Green and White conclude a three-game road trip Saturday in Fernie against the second-place Ghostriders before hosting Golden Rockets Sunday afternoon at the NDCC Arena.

Nelson defeated the Ghostriders in the lone meeting between the two clubs in November. Fernie enters the contest winners of two straight games.

Sunday, Nelson entertains the Rockets, who also have won two consecutive games, in a rare Sunday afternoon affair. The Leafs also hold the series lead, defeating the Rockets earlier this season.

Sunday’s game sees former Golden forward Shawn Grobowsky up against his ex-mates. Grobowsky was dealt to Nelson at the January 10th deadline. Puck drop Sunday is 4 p.m.

Kreitz continues to shine

Nelson Leafs netminder Caiden Kreitz continues to lead the KIJHL in goalie stats.

The Calgary, AB, native holds a commanding lead over the Andersons from Kimberley. Kreitz, who has lost just one game this season, holds a 1.53 goals against average as well as a .946 save percentage.

Adam Anderson is next at 1.94 goals against with Kimberley teammate Brett Anderson third at 2.02 GA. Nelson’s other goalie Hunter Young sits 13th with a 2.92 GA.

Watch out for Neilson, LeNoury

Forward Emery Neilson and defenceman Michael LeNoury enter the weekend on fire, each riding a five-game point streak. Neilson, fifth in team scoring with 15 points, has registered eight points, including two goals, during the streak.

Meanwhile, LeNoury also with eight points during the run, has scored twice.

Jack Karran leads the Leafs in scoring with 43 points, four ahead of Reid Wilson. Tyler Nypower is third with 30 points followed by Shawn Campbell with 28. Wilson leads Nelson in goals with 24.

Leafs raise Autism Spectrum Disorder awareness

The Nelson Leafs will once again join the fight to raise Autism Spectrum Disorder awareness during regular season home games in February.

Beginning Friday, February 8, when Nelson hosts Creston, will notice as new look when the Leafs take to the ice for the first period puck drop.

Thanks to Remedy’s in Nelson the Leafs will sport different jerseys in support for people in the autism spectrum. The new jerseys will be on display for the four regular season home games in February.
