A last-second miss from the charity stripe proved costly as the Rossland Royals edged the L.V. Rogers Bombers 33-32 in the battle for second spot at the Heritage City Classic Junior Girl’s Basketball Tournament Saturday at the Hangar.

After sinking the first of two free throws, Bomber captain Devyn Parker missed a crucial back end that could have tied the contest.

The LVR players tried desperately to grab the rebound but the played ended in a jump ball and Rossland, with the possession arrow in the favour of the Royals, ran out the clock.

“The tournament was a huge success,” said Bomber coach Val Gibson, still pleased despite the heartbreaking end to the two-day event.

LVR opened the tournament with a 30-16 loss to J. Lloyd Crowe Hawks of Trail. The Silver City squad won all three games to clinch the Heritage City title.

The Bombers rebounded in game two, dumping a feisty David Thompson Lakers team from Invermere 36-26 before dropping the one-point loss to Rossland.

“I was extremely satisfied with the play of the “rookie” squad,” Gibson explained. “Jayden Roch, Kyley Mirva, Lynnea Carr, Marley Watt and Erica Augsten all had break out performances this weekend.”
