Former Nelson Leafs defenceman Geoff Kinrade finished a minus-1 as the Ottawa Senators lost 4-2 to the Montreal Canadiens in National Hockey League pre-season action Friday night at the Bell Centre.

The contest was Kinrade’s first taste of NHL pre-season hockey this season. Kinrade is in his second training camp with the Senators after playing last season with Ottawa’s AHL minor league affiliate in Binghamton.

Kinrade didn’t play during the Sens 6-2 pasting of Carey Price and the Habs Saturday night in Ottawa.

The 6-foot, 195-pound Kinrade logged 13-plus minutes during Friday’s contest. He was whistled for a two-minute minor penalty and recorded one shot on goal.

Kinrade, 25, spent the 2009-10 season with the Baby Sens, registering professional highs in goals (seven), assists (20) and points (27) while accumulating 59 penalty minutes in a career-high 76 games.

He ranked first among B-Sens and finished tied for 14th in the AHL in plus/minus with a +27 rating. Kinrade is one of 15 defencemen remaining in camp with Ottawa.

Ottawa split its first two exhibition games defeating the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-0 Tuesday and losing 4-1 Wednesday. The Sens host Montreal in Ottawa tonight.

Kinrade played for the Nelson Leafs of the KIJHL before landing a spot with Cowichan Valley of the B.C. Hockey League.

He then spent four seasons at Michigan Tech University.
