The Donation Drive last week for N95 surgical masks by Kootenay Emergency Response Physician Association proved to be a success said Dr. Nicholas Sparrow in a Facebook video post.

Dr. Sparrow said the urgent call for donations from the community landed approximately 1,300 surgical masks to be distributed to first responders in the region to assist in the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Hurray, for the community,” Dr. Sparrow said in the Facebook video post.

“We managed to get some of those (masks) out to frontline emergency services and we have stored more for emergency services that run out.”

Dr. Sparrow said KERPA also helped out with a need for masks at Stepping Stones, an emergency shelter in Nelson.

Located on Vernon Street in Nelson, Stepping Stones is a 24/7 emergency shelter, operated by Nelson Cares, committed to end homelessness and secure affordable housing in Nelson.

“We heard about a need at Stepping Stones . . . they needed surgical mask for their workers, just to protect them,” Dr. Sparrow explained.

Dr. Sparrow added Stepping Stones also asked for donations of clean sleeping bags or cotton blankets for the shelter.

KERPA organizers held drop off locations in both Castlegar and Nelson, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

KERPA reached out to dentists, contractors, building suppliers and the communities in the West Kootenay to donate surplus N95 masks / Surgical Masks for the use and dispersal to our frontline emergency workers where needed to protect those saving lives.

KERPA is a registered Canadian charity with a mission to save lives, help the most critically ill and injured in our communities and to support emergency services. KERPA supports a volunteer emergency physicians to attend the most critical 911 calls in Nelson and surrounding area.
