Following two years of hot, dry weather to begin summer holidays, July returned to relatively cool, showery month said Ron Lakeman, meteorologist at the Southeast Fire Centre in the monthly weather synopsis.

Lakeman said July averaged out to be near normal as far as the total amount of rain and the mean monthly temperature.

“The average daily high temperature was 1 (one) degree cooler than normal and even though the amount of rain was near normal the number of days in which measurable rain fell was greater than normal,” Lakeman explained.

Lakeman said there were14 days with rain, with the normal being 10 — July of 2017 and 2018 only had two and four days with rain and were three to five degrees warmer than normal, respectively.

“The initial three weeks of the month were relatively eventful as Pacific disturbances frequently spread scattered showers and thundershowers across southern BC,” Lakeman said.

“The most significant bands of thundershowers locally produced 11.4 millimetres of rain during the night of July 23rd and early morning of July 24th.”

Lakeman said there were 10 days in which a thunderstorm was observed. The normal for July is 5 days of a thunderstorm.

He said a high pressure and dry, warmer conditions prevailed during the final week of the month.

Lakeman said there were no records were broken this month.

August is starting off as July concluded, with hot dry weather. This trend is expected to continue through the middle of the month.
