Inaugural Nelson Police Foundation fundraiser dinner deemed a success

The inaugural Nelson Police Foundation Cuffs and Claws Dinner proved to be an overwhelming success as more than 180 people gathered at the festive gala Saturday at Selkirk College Tenth Street Campus.

The gala was held to raise money for the Nelson Police Foundation.

During the evening Foundation Chair Howie Grant explained the role of the foundation is to providing education tools to its current sworn and civilian personal, develop and implement crime prevention or recreational community program — ie, DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program and Police Camp — and enhance public safety through the purchase of equipment or infrastructure not able to be purchase through the current department budget.

A current project by the NPF is the restoration of the 1969 Plymouth Satellite Vintage Police Car.

The NPF has also donated more than $60,000 to the Interpretive Centre at Kokanee Park.

As part of the festivities Nelson Police Board honoured former Mayor John Dooley for his nine years board chair along with members, NPD Deputy Chief Paul Burkart, Sergeants Corey Hoy and Nate Holt, Const. Jarrett Slomba and Bylaw Officer Fred Thomson being saluted for their respective roles in capturing an armed bank robber in April of 2014.

Also honoured for his supporting role in capturing the robber was Allen Denx of Nelson and District Credit Union.

The NPD members and Allan Danks were saluted in a special presentation by Chief Wayne Holland.
