Can natural electricity powered by electric eels be converted into enough usable energy to power our iPods, Blackberrys or even laptops?

That is the question posed by the second semi-finalist selected in the Year of Science Choose Science, Go Far, Win Big contest.

The winning idea is from Jiwan Toor, a 16-year-old student at Fleetwood Park Secondary school in Surrey. He is now eligible for the grand prize of a $25,000 scholarship.

Toor’s experiment will be carried out at the Vancouver Aquarium in the next few weeks. Conductors will be put in the water to capture the energy produced by the eels naturally.

Surrey-Tynehead MLA Dave S. Hayer presented Toor with his $250 prize package of science-themed goodies at Fleetwood Park Secondary School.

Based on the popular TV show MythBusters, the Year of Science video contest asks young people to upload videos of their ideas for science experiments or myths to be tested.

All entries can be submitted to a dedicated Year of Science YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/yearofsciencebc.

With two semi-finalists already chosen, there are only four more chances to win the $25,000 scholarship.
