A high-powered Hornets squad from South Okanagan proved to be too much for the locals at the Stanley Humphries Rockers High School Girl’s Fieldhockey Playday Saturday at the Pass Creek Pitch in Castlegar.

The South Okanagan Hornets of Oliver cruised past all four West Kootenay teams to claim top prize in both the Junior and Senior side of the draw.

“Oliver was superior in both Junior and Senior ranks,” said L.V. Rogers Bomber coach Val Gibson.

The Hornets blasted LVR Bombers 6-0 in the Senior Girl’s action along with posting high goal scores against the other teams in the tournament — Rossland Royals and Stanley Humphries Rockers.

The Bombers also dropped games to Rossland 2-0, a second South Okanagan squad 3-0 and to the Rockers 1-0.

“With an inexperienced squad I was happy with the results,” explained Gibson, who lost a few key Grade 11 players who decided to focus on other sports. “The learning curve was amazing but the attitude of the players remains fantastic.”

Trafalgar Totems, a team consisting of players in Grade 6 to Grade 8, entered in the junior side of the draw. Coached by Jesse Anast, Trafalgar lost its opener to Stanley Humphries 2-0 and a second contest to Rossland.

The Royals finished second to Oliver in the Senior Girl’s draw with Stanley Humphries edging out LVR four third.

The Bombers return to action Thursday with a mixed contest against city rival Trafalgar Totems.

Game time is right after school at Queen Elizabeth Park.
