Despite Covid restrictions, Grand Forks RCMP said calls for service slightly went up compared to same period in 2020.

In a media release, Grand Forks RCMP said crime stats show that local Mounties were slightly busier this year compared to the same time frame of 2020.

From January 1 to March 31 of 2020, local police attended 651 calls for service. In the same period of 2021, police responded to 679 calls for service, which equates to a 4% increase.

Some of the more notable calls for service are:

  • Theft Under $5000 – 14 in 2020 and 15 in 2021
  • Suspicious Person – 60 in 2020 and 58 in 2021
  • Cause a Disturbance – 12 in 2020 and 13 in 2021
  • Check Wellbeing – 28 in 2020 and 39 in 2021
  • Assaults – 8 in 2020 and 7 in 2021
  • Break and Enter to a Residence – 2 in 2020 and 10 in 2021
  • Break and Enter to a Business – 2 in 2020 and 4 in 2021
  • Fraud – 6 in 2020 and 7 in 2021
  • False 911 calls – 35 in 2020 and 16 in 2021

“While our numbers have remained the same with many of our calls for service, we did expect to see increases in other areas, such as checking the wellbeing of a loved one during these Covid times,” says Detachment Commander Sergeant Darryl Peppler.

“Even with Covid restrictions in place for the foreseeable future, we are planning on a busy spring and summer as the weather warms up.”
