Golden and District Search and Rescue were kept busy during the weekend with a pair of rescues at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort and in the back country near Silent Pass.
The hectic Saturday (March 8) began at 3:13 p.m. when Golden RCMP received a report from the International Emergency Response Reporting a Spot activation, with GPS coordinates north of Duncan Lake, near Parson.
It was determined that three avid snowmobilers with experience in back country sledding, and overnight winter camping, were associated to the beacon.
Search and Rescue personal were advised, attempting to locate the males via helicopter.
That plan was grounded due to severe weather conditions. Search officials decided to make another attempt the following morning.
At daylight Sunday, Golden and District Search and Rescue resumed their search and were able to locate all three males.
The men said their snowmobiles had become stuck and they decided to activate the emergency beacon before setting up an overnight camp.
One man from Airdrie, AB, was transported back to Golden via helicopter to be treated for non life threatening injuries related to smoke inhalation.
The other two males, one from Calgary, and the other from Kelowna, were transported back to their vehicle by Search and Rescue.
Later Saturday, Golden RCMP were advised at 7:31 p.m. by Kicking Horse Mountain Resort that a male snowboarder from Calgary was reported missing by friends.
The friends said they became separated during a runs and their friend had failed to return to the base of the mountain.
Kicking Horse Mountain Resort conducted sweeps of the mountain and were not able to locate the missing male. However a single snowboard track was located going in to an out of bounds area, known as Canyon Creek.
Ski Patrollers were unable to ski into the area at night due to weather conditions and Golden and District Search and Rescue was advised.
Sunday morning, rescue teams conducted a search of the mountain by helicopter.
The male was located and advised rescuers he spent the night in a tree well to keep dry.
The male was then transported back to Golden via helicopter but did not sustain any injuries.
