Ghostriders outlast Nelson Leafs 6-4

Johnny Elias scored with less than three minutes in the game to power the Fernie Ghorstriders to a 6-4 Kootenay International Junior Hockey League victory over the Nelson Leafs Thursday night in the East Kootenay City.

The win was the second in three meetings for the Ghostriders against the Murdoch Division leaders. Both previous games had been won in overtime.

Elias combined with Seamus Keith to snap a shot past Leafs’ netminder Anderson Violette for the game-winner.

Jordon Kromm and Dylan Defosse, with an empty net marker, each scored two goals to pace the Riders, second in the Eddie Mountain Division behind front-running Kimberley Dynamiters.

Aiden Gleisner added the other marker for Fernie.

Cole Wyatt, Bryden Pow, Jaden Shumilak and Reid Wilson replied for the visiting team that rallied from a 4-1 deficit early in the second period to tie the contest in the third.

Nelson kept Ghostriders’ goalie Ethan Fitzgerald busy for most of the game, outshooting the hosts 48-33.

Nelson continues its road trip Friday night in Kimberley against the Eddie Mountain leading Kimberley Dynamiters.

Kimberley won the only previous meeting this season between the two division leaders.

LEAF NOTES: Cole Wyatt, Bryden Pow, Reid Wilson and Nelson Game Star Shawn Campbell each finished the game with two points. . . . The loss was the second in four meetings for Nelson goalie Anderson Violette. The Calgary, AB, native opened the season with Nelson winning eight consecutive games. After hovering around the top of the KIJHL goalie stats page, Violette has dropped to 11th overall . . . .Nelson’s leading goal scorer Reid Wilson pushed his point streak to eight games. Cole Wyatt has points in the last four games. . . . The game against Fernie is the first in a six-game string away from home. Five of the six games are against Eddie Mountain teams. . . .Next game at the NDCC Arena is Friday, December 13th against Revelstoke Grizzlies.
