The north end of the Slocan Valley could be getting a new ferryboat like the Osprey 2000 that plies the waters of Kootenay Lake.

Nakusp Mayor Karen Hamling confirmed a ferry advisory committee had been struck to deal with the Provicne in requesting adding a larger capacity boat to the Galena Bay Ferry run across the Arrow Lakes, about 45 kilometres north of Nakusp.

“The ferry we have now is constantly breaking down, and we need a bigger, more reliable ferry for economic development in the area,” she said.

The committee is waiting to hear back from the Province’s Ministry of Transportation in December, although an expression of interest has already gone out on the project.

A new ferry is expected to take 82 vehicles instead of the 49 the larger ferry at galena Bay now carries, with up to 11 shipment trucks instead of three being loaded as well.

The smaller ferry will be kept on during busy season, but the bigger one would be retired.

There was no mention of the idea of the new ferry being built locally like the Osprey 2000 was in Nelson.
