Future of hockey unveiled at Nelson Novice Tournament

Nelson Minor Hockey hosted the best tournament of the season this past weekend at the NDCC Arena as teams flocked to the Heritage City to compete in the annual Novice tournament.
A total of three Junior Novice teams and six Senior Novice teams from Spokane, South Okanagan and Trail/Rossland along with two Nelson squads each played three games during the weekend in the playday format.
In Junior Novice play, Nelson beat Trail Raptors 6-2 with goals scored by Jasper Marshall assisted by Jaxon Slomba and Haley Hutt, River Marshall assisted by Marley Fode, Brody Arjun assisted by Kieran Mucha, Jack Fode, Theo Byers-Bohigian and Wesley Jordan.
The host club then edged Trail Hawks 5-4 with two goals by River Marshall and Wesley Jordan while Jasper Marshall added a single.
Nelson dropped its final game to the Hawks 6-4 with goals from River Marshall assisted by Weston McBeath, Caleb Bernhardt, Jaxon Slomba assisted by Eryn Dimopoulus, and Wesley Jordan.
Senior Novice results had Nelson finishing with a 2-1-1 record.
Friday Nelson tied Greater Trail Orange Crush 1 -1 as Larson Proctor scored the only goal and won player of the game.
Saturday Nelson dropped a 6-1 decision to Spokane Kings.
Wyatt Groenhuysen scored Nelson’s lone goal while goalie Shea Andersen was player of the game.
Nelson bounced back to defeat Spokane River Rats 5 -1 later in the day.
Grady Groenhuysen, brother Wyatt Groenhuysen each had a pair, while Jack Boyes, with three assists, was named player of game.
Sunday Nelson concluded the tournament with a 4-0 win over Greater Trail Storm Troopers.
Larson Proctor, Wyatt Groenhuysen, player of the game Dax Dewar and Grady Groenhuysen scored for Nelson.
All games ended in a fun five-minute shootout with the first team to sink five pucks.
Nelson won all four shootouts thanks to the amazing play of goaltender Shea Andersen.
The tournament boosted the population of the Heritage City for the annual event for boys and girls between the ages of five to eight years.
