Falcons rip Kootenay River to capture Kootenay Classic

The Fernie Falcons started fast and never looked back en route to a convincing 102-51 decision over Kootenay River of Creston in the final of the Kootenay Classic High School Boys Basketball Tournament Saturday at the L.V. Rogers Hangar in Nelson.

The Falcons led 10-2 early, extending the margin to 22-13 after one quarter to easily claim the championship.

Bryson Barr scored 24 points to lead the Falcons, seeded as Honourable Mention in the most recent BC High School Boys AA Basketball rankings.

Fernie advanced to the the six-team tournament final by defeating Kootenay AA rivals J. Lloyd Crowe Hawks of Trail 93-51 and Stanley Humphries of Castlegar 80-29.

Host L.V. Rogers Bombers struggled throughout the two-day event, dropping two games Friday in round robin play — 65-58 to Kootenay River and 72-36 to Mount Baker of Cranbrook.

LVR lost in the five-six contest Saturday, dropping 68-56 decision to Crowe Hawks.

Cole Woodward led the Bomber scoring with 12 points while Malachy Poitras added 10.

In the consolation final, Mount Baker Wild dumped Stanley Humphries Coyotes 81-35.

The Bombers return to action Wednesday when Grand Forks Wolves pay a visit to the Hangar.

The Junior Bombers open the two-game set against the Junior Wolves at 4 p.m. with the Senior Game to follow.
